Caffé Lena, in Saratoga Springs, NY,
is the oldest continuously running
Folk Music Club in the United States.
Following the spirit of the indomitable
Lena Spencer.
As Lena would always open the evening,
"Welcome to The Caffé Lena..."
There's so many stories up the stairs.
Easy, up the squeeky steps, turn right at the landing (you got another choice?), look and see Dorthea and Lena playing scrabble. Or maybe Dorthea was caning the Caffé chairs that night... Old Tom smoking his pipe. The creaks and motion from the stairs and floor are just the embedded emotion and music of the club. (Use your cursor to knock on the door to go upstairs...)
Some of the real songs are in the memories these walls have heard. Can you hear the street sounds from hot August nights... Sometimes bringing the upwelling sounds of everyday hollers and un-restrained fun blasting into the quiet part of a song... It's all here.
As Tom Mitchell, a wonderful Singer-Songwriter who got his early start at The Caffe
(didn't that sound like Lena ?) says about his own tales, "Some True... some a little truer... And Some, just a little too true to tell..."
