Cowboy-Poet Buck Ramsey, was a very special friend of David's. He passed away on the 3rd of January at his home in Amarillo. He's been sort of the guiding spirit of The Elko Cowboy Poetry Gathering put on by The Western Folklife Center for years... He'll be missed by everyone who shared his path for even the smallest time. He said a real cowboy never called himself one. Everyone called Buck a Cowboy. Here's some words from the prologue to his major work, "As I Walked Out One Morning"...
And hear the message on the wind.
The grass in morning dew would glisten
Until the sun would dry and bend
The grass to ground and air to skying.
We'd know by bird or insect flying
Or by their mood or by their song
If time and moon were right or wrong

For fitting works and rounds to weather.
The critter coats and leaves of trees
Might flash some signal with a breeze -
Or wind and sun on flow'r or feather.
We knew our way from dawn to dawn,
And far beyond, and far beyond.

The level of right-wing paramilitary violence in Chiapas, Mexico has dramatically escellated in
the past month or so. The latest massacre, on December 22nd., was only the latest, albeit by far
the largest, incidence of paramilitary violence directed by right-wing paramilitary death squads
against helpless Mayan civilians.
A few weeks ago, there was also a right-wing assassination attempt on two Bishops in the
Chiapas area.

"This is the logic of a low-intensity war, with the army and the government against
the indigenous people" said Pablo Romo Cedano, coordinator of the Fray Bartolome
Center for Human Rights
At least seven paramilitary groups, with names like Peace and Justice, the Red
Masks and the Indigenous Revolutionary Anti-Zapatista Movement (MIRA), are said
to exist in Chiapas and to be army-trained.
