Sad News Interuption...
Cowboy-Poet Buck Ramsey, was a very special friend of David's. He passed away on the 3rd of January at his home in Amarillo. He's been sort of the guiding spirit of The Elko Cowboy Poetry Gathering put on by The Western Folklife Center for years... He'll be missed by everyone who shared his path for even the smallest time. He said a real cowboy never called himself one. Everyone called Buck a Cowboy. Here's some words from the prologue to his major work, "As I Walked Out One Morning"...

Oh, we would ride and we would listen
And hear the message on the wind.
The grass in morning dew would glisten
Until the sun would dry and bend
The grass to ground and air to skying.
We'd know by bird or insect flying
Or by their mood or by their song
If time and moon were right or wrong
For fitting works and rounds to weather.
The critter coats and leaves of trees
Might flash some signal with a breeze -
Or wind and sun on flow'r or feather.
We knew our way from dawn to dawn,
And far beyond, and far beyond.

Thanks Buck, we'll be singin', toasting and reciting words for you in Elko at The Cowboy Poetry Gathering... Thanks to thier site for the fine photo of Buck...
Buck's passing notice from The Amarillo Globe-Mail...

Okay.. It's The Holiday Season!
Yeah, it's been a few weks, but the tree's still up... Okay.. It's a 70 foot Redwood out off the upper pasture.
Last night we had Caroling at The Union Hotel(There, Danny...) in Occidental. The Bocce Ballroom (It was Mahoney's idea to call it that. Son Mark saw it after the name first went up and just shook his head... I love it.) was over-flowing onto the sidewalk where Jake, The Rein-Dog and I greeted kids and anyone else that wanted to pet and hug a Rein-Dog. His antlers were wondeful this year. Last year a little kid, barely able to talk, told a pal that he remembered The Rein-Dog from the year before when he was little.

From various CNN Reports...
The level of right-wing paramilitary violence in Chiapas, Mexico has dramatically escellated in the past month or so. The latest massacre, on December 22nd., was only the latest, albeit by far the largest, incidence of paramilitary violence directed by right-wing paramilitary death squads against helpless Mayan civilians.
A few weeks ago, there was also a right-wing assassination attempt on two Bishops in the Chiapas area.
The Chiapas Solidarity Page.
"This is the logic of a low-intensity war, with the army and the government against the indigenous people" said Pablo Romo Cedano, coordinator of the Fray Bartolome Center for Human Rights
At least seven paramilitary groups, with names like Peace and Justice, the Red Masks and the Indigenous Revolutionary Anti-Zapatista Movement (MIRA), are said to exist in Chiapas and to be army-trained.

There have been an unusual number of deaths during law enforcement action in Sonoma County in the past two years...
It's raised the concerns of The United States Civil Rights Commission which, though downgraded to it's State Advisory Board following Law enforcement pressure, held a 10 hour hearing in February.
In the three weeks since the hearing there have been two jail suicides (one a friend of mine) and one a suspect's fatal shooting in Petaluma.

Since September 1996, when the Taliban militia group took over the Afghan capital city of Kabul, women in the majority of Afghanistan have been prisoners in their homes. The Taliban has:

  • banned women from working outside the home;
  • banned women from attending university;
  • banned girls from going to school;
  • prohibited women from leaving their homes unless accompanied by a husband, father, brother, or son;
  • required women who do leave their homes to be covered from head to toe in a "burqa," with only a mesh opening to see and breathe through;
  • required homes with women to paint their windows opaque so the women inside cannot be seen;
  • and even banned women from wearing shoes that make noise when they walk.
